Most of us would like investments which are safe, in the sense that they cannot fall, and which offer high returns. This ideal combination is not available so beware anyone who claims otherwise.

When planning to save regularly or invest a lump sum, a number of factors should be taken into account. These factors are translated into what the investment  industry class as 'Risk'.

We have found that most of us will interpret the word 'risk' in different ways and so we have developed a new way of thinking here at Salus Financial Solutions. By asking a number of very specific questions we are able to accurately assess your appetite for risk, which in turn enables us to deliver recommendations that reflect this. Also, by completing these questions you may discover that your risk tolerance is higher or lower than you had previously thought. For example, cash deposits over a certain level held in banks are classified as a risk level of three out of ten.

Broadly speaking, the longer that your investment is to be left alone, (e.g. for retirement), the higher level of risk that is acceptable. If however the money may be needed in the near future (e.g. for a house deposit) then short-term safety is essential.
